Identification and study of a new historical painting
by Spanish Romantic painter Antonio María Esquivel,
which went unnoticed in the Madrid art market a few years ago as an anonymous work. This work represents a significant contribution to the artist’s limited output in the historical genre known to date, as well as an important link in the evolution of Spanish historical painting during the Romantic period and, specifically, in the treatment of iconographic cycles dedicated to Christopher Columbus and the Catholic Monarchs. Above all, however, it constitutes a new and relevant key to the interpretation of Esquivel’s best-known painting,
as it is an intentional manifesto of his standing and prestige in the artistic scene of the court of Isabel
II.
