America and Spain: the two official journeys of the infanta Eulalia de Borbón (1893) and the infanta Isabel de Borbón (1910) that made the bond.
Abstract
During five centuries of common history between America and Spain, only three people from the Spanish royal family actually set foot in America, and all three were infantas: Carlota Joaquina de Borbón (1775-1830), and the sisters Isabel de Borbón (1851-1931) and Eulalia de Borbón (1864-1958), daughters of Isabel II. These last two made official trips on behalf of the Spanish Crown, of great resonance in their personal lives, the history of the Royal House and the common bond between America and Spain. The first was the official trip of the Infanta Eulalia, in 1893, on the IV Centennial of the Discovery of America, which took her on a long journey to visit Puerto Rico, Cuba and the United States, where she was received by President Cleveland and visited the Universal Columbian Exposition on behalf of the King of Spain -Alfonso XIII- and Queen Regent María Cristina. From what she saw on the trip, the Infanta Eulalia predicted the imminent war and the loss of the island of Cuba in 1898. The second was the official trip of the Infanta Isabel La Chata to Buenos Aires, in 1910, to commemorate the Centennial of the Independence of Argentina, on behalf of her nephew, King Alfonso XIII. The committed trip began with threats of a boycott of her presence and ended with a memorable diplomatic and personal success for the infanta, which was of great benefit to the public image of the Spanish Royal Crown.
