CHRISTIANITY IN THE SINIC WORLD: EVOLUTION OF CHRISTIAN RELATIONS WITH CHINA
Abstract
Christianity is the predominance religion in the world. Its imprint has been essential for the creation of the West, in which it keeps its deep roots, and yet it has enjoyed a universal character. Within this expansion, the People's Republic of China is witnessing its remarkable progress, leading some specialists to consider that by 2050 it could be the country with the largest Christian population, mainly under the Catholic and Protestant denominations. Despite the existence of Russian Orthodox Christians in China, their low number and lack of state recognition has led to their omission from this study. Taking into account this reality, the article focuses on offering what has been the relationship of Catholic and Protestant Christianity with China, differentiating for this three concatenated periods of time: the period that covers from the founding of this religion and its Nestorian variant (first denomination in reaching the Sinic world in the V century), until the stable arrival of Westerners to the Asian country in the XIV century; the stage of foreign impositions during the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century; ending with the years that elapse from the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, to the present, where the gradual increase of believers is perceived in the face of hostility from the authorities.
