The essence of the spirit in Edith Stein as a ground for an education of openness

Current analyzes converge in the recognition of “spirit” (Geist) as a dorsal notion in Edith Stein’s thought. Its plausibility lies in the fact that it claims both a contemporary understanding of the human being –finite being– and because in this notion the condition of possibility of transcendence –eternal being– is also noted. However, it remains to be elucidated why this is so, what is the essence of the “spirit” that enables it for such an immanent-transcendent movement. In our opinion, this is fundamentally explained through the category of “openness” (Offenheit). Our thesis consists, then, in maintaining that it is precisely openness that turns out to be the essence of the spirit that makes it be-capable-of-Being-Eternal. In other words, because the spirit essence as openness, the finite-being not only opens to the infinite- being, but, especially, the Eternal-Being communicates to the finite-being. This foundation allows us to establish that educating the spirit consists not so much of educating interiority, but of openness, that is, maintaining openness, preventing the human being from being dragged by his centripetal movements. To achieve our purpose, we will fundamentally base ourselves on The Structure of the Human Person, Potency and Act: Studies Towards a Philosophy of Being, as well as Finite and Eternal Being: An Attempt at an Ascent to the Meaning of Being, although we will transversely the issue to other writings in the Collected Works.
