Interiority and “New Creation” in the Anthropological Reflection of Romano Guardini
Abstract
The aim of this essay is to deepen the relationship between Christian interiority and the doctrine of the “New Creation” in the anthropological reflection of Romano Guardini. First and foremost, the ways in which Guardini defines Christian interiority will be reviewed. According to Guardini, Christian interiority in the full sense is that created by God in man. It is God himself who creates the interior depth in which he comes to dwell. When God comes to the believer, it is the intimacy of God that comes to man: therefore, man’s innermost interiority is God himself. It will be afterwards analyzed the idea of “New creation”. The existence of the Christian faithful is based on a struggle with own self, but in the sunset of the old creation the “new” takes shape. The starting point of this work of recreation is the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, which represents an absolute beginning: everything in Christ finds space to be modified and transfigured. By accepting that in each one’ self we live “in God” we become truly ourselves: man becomes a person only in the pneumatic element and in faith, that is, starting from the grace and in-existence in the Son of God, in the mutual interpenetration between himself and the Son.
