Empathy in the dentist-patient relationship from the perspective of Edith Stein

Accelerated clinical practice, combined with the pandemic that began in 2020, contributes to a dehumanized professional practice, lacking empathy. In the training of stomatologists there is talk of a biopsychosocial model, however, for the most part it focuses more on the biological. Stein, when she was a nurse at the Red Cross, contributed to strengthening her observations with the wounded and providing the understanding and help they needed based on her experiences. To make visible the role of empathy in the dentist-patient relationship in accordance with the philosophy of Edith Stein. A literature review was carried out from the databases of the American Psychological Association (APA), Google Scholar, Cambridge University and Ebsco, which were published from 2005 to date. The MeSH terms used were empathy, empathy, stomatologist-patient relationship. 12 articles were used for this review. Although the importance of empathy in other health professionals such as doctors and nurses has been documented, there is still little information regarding the construction of empathy in the dentist-patient relationship. Stomatological care should be open and inclusive, however, there are still prejudices and stigmas in clinical care in different social groups. The phases in the acts of empathy, the sensual and emotional types, are addressed and a difference is made between low-level and high-level empathy. As health professionals, it is necessary to understand the patient’s experience and be aware of understanding them as biopsychosocial individuals to achieve a shared vision, which does not belong to either the patient or the stomatologist.
