Educational personalism, Edith Stein’s response to current proceduralism

Abstract

Edith Stein offers in her realistic and personalistic anthropology some keys to education. We intend to go deeper into the foundations of her anthropology and her educational theory. We find in the realist attitude, in her tireless search for the truth of the human being, the basis of her theory of empathy and her vision of human dignity. We also find the basis of a new methodology that starts from human experience as the field of the search for the truth of the human being; a new methodological approach that will characterise contemporary ethical personalism. We consider that these anthropological foundations are the fundamental axis of his pedagogy, of a specific realism that characterised his educational theory. At present, we observe and suffer from a methodological complexity which, by dint of increasing the competences and skills of learners, leads to a forest of didactic proceduralisms which end up separating the teacher from the learner and both from the specific subject matter which is the vehicle for the primordial educational act. We call this drift of present-day education educational proceduralism. Edith Stein, with her realism, her personalist anthropology and her theory of education, can offer us an answer to the current educational problem.
